Summary
Using a self-developed optimization algorithm, we designed and fabricated Taiwan's first 2 cm thermal imaging metalens with a 60° field of view, aberration correction, and broadband achromatic performance (8-12 μm). This lightweight, 1-gram metalens is ideal for drones and aerospace, addressing reliance on imports and enhancing national security.
Scientific Breakthrough
Achieving large-diameter, wide-field-of-view, and broadband achromatic performance in metalenses is challenging. In 2024, University of Washington and U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory researchers developed a 1 cm thermal imaging metalens with achromatic correction. Our metalens, with a 2 cm diameter, achieves a 60° wide field of view, is achromatic and aberration-free. The simple meta-atom structure is conducive to mass production, fabricated on an 8-inch silicon wafer.
Industrial Applicability
The lightweight, compact metalens suits drone, satellites, and factory machine tools, detecting short circuits. It's also suitable for automotive use, detecting heat reflections. Mass production is cost-effective, with potential in defense. Customized development enhances competitiveness.
