Summary |
Pingtung exhibited the highest production of lemon (30000 tons per year) in Taiwan, with the wasted peel about 4000 tons per year. The high amount of functional composition in lemon peel was discarded as waste. In our study, the flavedo powder of lemon peel may exhibit pretty high inhibition ability on α-amylase (92%) after hydrolysis under suitable condition and microencapsulation. They also showed a high SOD-like activity (5000 U/g) as well as high amount of polyphenol and flavonoids. Since this natural product may help to balance the blood sugar without side-effect, the potential of its development can be deeply expected. Besides, the high amount of sinapic acid and esculetin, which can activate the formation of brown adipose tissue and anti-adipogenesis, may strengthen the efficiency of α-amylase inhibition and can be applied in the anti-obesity. This is the first product come from lemon peel to function on balancing the blood sugar and might prevent post-hyperglycemia. |

As type II diabetes increase rapidly, some of the drug may help to regulate the blood sugar through reducing starch digestion. This flavedo powder from natural lemon peel may exhibit 10 times of α-amylase inhibition and 2 times of SOD-like activity, may significantly meet the requirement of the market and circular economy. Besides, the high amount of sinapic acid and esculetin, which can activate the formation of brown adipose tissue and anti-adipogenesis, may strengthen the efficiency of α-amylase inhibition and can be applied in the preventing obesity .
