Summary |
Our team has been working on dry sensors and wireless BCI systems for many years. In our past research, we found that migraine EEG in the preictal stage had a significant drop in the delta band at the forehead Fpz channel. We further calculated the inherent fuzzy entropy, which leads to the physiological indicator before the headache attack. Therefore, based on these findings, we further designed a wearable brain-computer interface system combined with artificial intelligence algorithms to develop a migraine early detection and warning system, which has been published in 2020 IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems Journal (IF = 8.759, Rank: 10/265, Top: 3.77%, citations: 32), and was selected as the "highly cited paper" in 2020 by the Web of Science Journal Citation Report (JCR). Figure 2 showed the highlight of our system. We do hope it can not only relieve patients' pain during migraine attacks but also eliminate the uncertainty of attack occur and feel disburden in their everyday life. |
Scientific Breakthrough |
Multiple research on EEG of migraine patients has shown that occipital lobe activation (attention) is positively correlated with the degree of pain. Based on the features of migraine patients' EEG, we hope to make effective predictions through the features in the prodromal stage of migraine. According to our previous researches, we found that the absolute power of the delta frequency band of the forehead EEG has dropped significantly during the prodromal stage of migraine. We integrate the single-channel EEG receiving devices in our precise migraine prediction system. To give migraine patients a user-friendly experience as a home device for assisting diagnosis. |
Industrial Applicability |
In clinical medical expenditure, the annual expenditure of migraine patients in the United States is 4,144 USD (about NT$ 120,000), and the annual expenditure of migraine patients in the UK is 3,700 Euro (about NT$ 140,000). Therefore, based on the above US data, we can roughly estimate the US market: the US population is about 310 million, based on the North American migraine prevalence rate of 12%, the US migraine population is about 37 million, and the US migraine per capita expenditure is 4100 Calculated in US dollars, the US migraine market demand is about 151.7 billion US dollars, of which 47.6% are mild migraine patients, that is, the market demand for mild migraine patients is as high as about 72.2 billion US dollars. |
