Summary |
This technology is to design a semi-submersible platform that can carry a 15MW wind turbine in the ocean. The platformits mooring system shall be able to withstand a typhoon of 50-year return period. It must have a ballast control system that keep the platform stable in windswaves, allowing production of wind power. The TaidaFloat design team researched more than 20 different shapes of platforms, chose the most optimized dimension that satisfies all the design requirements such as platform stabilityweight control. Currently, floating offshore wind technology is still under development. This technology development has the potential to grow the offshore wind industry for Taiwancan be competitive globally. |
Scientific Breakthrough |
The platformits mooring system must be able to withstand a typhoon of 50-year return period. It must have a ballast control system that keep the platform stable in windswaves, allowing production of wind power. The entire system must survive the long design life of 20 years. Instead of conventional design by enlarging the platform dimensionsmooring chains in order to meet the design requirements, TaidaFloat has been optimized to the point where its performance indexes, total displacementsteel weight, are on the high par among competing designs from developed countries. The optimal design developed in TaidaFloat is on the forefront of current technology globally,a breakthrough for Taiwan offshore wind industry. |
Industrial Applicability |
TaidaFloat has design features, including: 1. Constructionfabrication are easy because of the full use flat plates. 2.The vessel has great stability that maintains a small trim/heel angle even when ballast-transfer pumps are not engaged. 3. The hull shape adopts the conventional arrangement of columns with a ring pontoon. 4. The main column is made larger so that the extra buoyancy may support the turbine weight. 5. The pontoon is designed as wide as practical to provide damping to reduce vessel motions, e.g. heave, increase stability. 6. Generous areaspace are provided for the top (deck) of the main column, the three horizontal bracings. Overall, TaidaFloat has the potential to speed up Taiwan offshore wind development. |
