Summary
This project establishes a complete net zero emission system for waste conversionreuse. The biomass wastes were pre-treated with novel technologywere then subjected to low-temperature torrefactioncarbonization to convert them into biochar to serve as a coal substitute. The waste gas produced during torrefaction was purified to clean CO2 through the PSA methodthe CO2 was used to grow microalgae with high CO2 carbon sequestration efficiency in a continuous mode. The biomass produced can either be burned to generate heat energyused to produce high-value chemicals through extractionfermentation to achieve BECCS.
Scientific Breakthrough
"1. The developed additives were added to the biomass waste to reduce the moisture content by over 50inhibit microbial growth to improve the feedstock storage stability.
 
 2. The developed additives were added to the torrefaction system to increase the calorific value of biochar by over 15increase the carbon content by over 30.
 
 3. The specific microalgal strain with high thermal tolerancehigh carbon fixation efficiency was used to establish a photobioreactor for the continuous carbon fixation operation. The outdoor scale-up operation was also verified. 
 
 4. The team effectively combines the above three technologies to achieve BECCS."
Industrial Applicability
"1. The industrial low-temperature waste heat can be recoveredreused as a source of heat energy for roasting biomass waste.
 
 2. If the reuse of industrial biomass waste can be implemented, it will effectively reduce the cost of waste removaltransportation.
 
 3. The development of biochar fuelmicroalgae carbon-negative technology can increase the future carbon credits of the industryreduce the cost of a carbon tax.
