Summary |
ALTOMS (Altomated Laser TrackingOptogenetic Manipulation System) is a real-time computer vision object recognitionlaser tracker. It uses a missile-like image recognitiontracking technology,uses several lasers to accurately hit the tracked object. The laser itself does not have the function of controlling nerves, but when we express light-sensitive proteins on specific nerve cells, we can stimulateinhibit nerves through lasers of specific wavelengths, which will affect the behavioral outcome.

Scientific Breakthrough |
This machine uses computer vision to real-time track specific moving objects, then feedback control the dual-axis galvo-mirrors to guide the laser to target on the objects for light excitation. Such process only takes 42ms,the correct nerve cells can be easily stimulated even when the living fruit fly sample is moving at a high speed. The targeted flies can be remotely controlled by activated specific neuronal activities, which further controls fly behavior.
