骨是動態平衡的組織，造骨細胞形成骨基質，破骨細胞具有蝕骨作用。在關節腔發炎作用會使巨噬細胞分化成破骨細胞，破骨細胞放出基質金屬蛋白酶，分解骨質造成骨損傷。骨質疏鬆也是因破骨細胞放出基質金屬蛋白酶，分解骨質的活性大於造骨細胞的修捕作用。本發明提供一種純化合物能抑制破骨細胞的基質金屬蛋白酶功能，同時也能抑制巨噬細胞發炎反應，可用於改善風濕性關節炎及骨質疏鬆。

全球約有2億個女性罹患骨質疏鬆，2003年骨質疏鬆及荷爾蒙補充療法之全球市場為83億美元，預估2014年可達179億美元。已知單純增加鈣吸收在改善骨質疏鬆方面效果有限。雌激素具有致癌的風險。目前治療上使用最多的雙磷酸鹽，副作用強，只能用於治療無法用來預防。在台灣，目前審核通過的健康食品僅有3項可宣稱改善骨質疏鬆。因此在市場上還有很大發展空間。
