Summary |
A freeze-dried artificial blood diet and explored the practical application of an artificial feeder for the mass rearing of Aedes mosquitoes and biting midge. These in vitro bioassay systems were developed for the high-throughput screening of novel compounds for their potential use as mosquito repellents and mosquito repellent textile |
Scientific Breakthrough |
Successful colonies of the biting midges and Aedes mosquitoes were established and maintained in the laboratory by feeding blood with an artificial blood-feeding apparatus. The survival rate, fecundity, pupation, and pupal emergence rates of females fed on artificial blood meals were not significantly different from the animal-fed ones. The artificial blood diet was convenient and easy to prepare. |
Industrial Applicability |
Mass rearing of the biting midges and Aedes mosquitoes in the laboratory by feeding blood with an artificial blood-feeding apparatus. The artificial blood feeder and diets were convenient, inexpensive and easy to prepare. The in vitro bioassay for the quantitative evaluation of mosquito repellents is strong economic commercial value. |
