Technical Name YAGI ANTENNA WITH METAMATERIAL GUIDER AND REFLECTOR
Project Operator National Pingtung University
Project Host 蘇欣龍
Summary
One-dimension metamaterials is instead of the reflector and directors of the Yagi-Uda antenna called MYUA (metamaterial-Yagi-Uda antenna). The length of the MYUA is 10% shorter than that of the traditional Yagi-Uda antenna but the peak gain of MYUA is the same as the peak gain of the traditional Yagi-Uda antenna. Designed the reflective phase of the metamaterial for the reflector in the properly distance to the driven that can reach constructive interference. The refractive index of the metamaterial of the director is designed less than one. The director can focus the electromagnetic wave to improve the antenna gain. The MYUA operates at ISM band 2.4 GHz and the overall size is 150 mm × 70 mm × 0.8 mm. This MYUA is compose of one driven, one reflector and some directors. The peak gain of this MYUA are 8 dBi and 10 dBi when the directors are three layers and seven layers. The efficiency is between 70 – 83%.
Scientific Breakthrough
This concept of the design of metamaterial was introduced into design Yagi-Uda antenna in this technique. Metamaterial-reflector/-directors, which are only used fewer unit-cells of the metamaterial, are instead of the reflector/directors of the traditional Yagi-Uda antenna. The length of metamaterial-Yagi-Uda antenna is 10% shorter than that of the traditional Yagi-Uda antenna. The structure of the metamaterial Yagi-Uda antenna is also flat.
Industrial Applicability
Metamaterial-Yagi-Uda antenna is one kind of end-fire high gain antennas. They can be applied to the end to end communication system. They also can be used in remote control toys, such as remote control aircraft.
