Acylethanolamides (AEs) is one of the ethanolamide lipids and abundant in cellular membrane of gastrointestinal tract. They include endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA) paleitoylethanolamide (PEA) and Oleoylethanolamide (OEA). In the present study, we demonstrated that AEs (especially OEA) could be a chemo-sensitizer. AEs and carotenoids (β-carotene, retinoid acid and lycopene) could significantly inhibit the proliferation and induce cell death of several human cancer cell lines including human lung carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, breast cancer, hepatoma, prostate cancer, oral cancer, leukemia, gastric cancer, neuroblastoma and ovary cancer cells.
