The antenna is modified from a symmetrical self-complementary strip-slot structure. It is investigated that the antenna not only operates on the GSM, PCN, and Bluetooth bands, but also operates on the GPS band by suitably etching the slot pattern. Without using this technique, the antenna can only be worked at three separated narrow bands. The strip pattern is on the upper surface of a substrate and a slot pattern is on the backside of the substrate. In one design example, one arm of the U-shaped slot on the ground plane is straight extended to the rim of the printed circuit board. In another design example, one arm of the U-slot is bent 90 degrees toward the rim of the printed circuit board.
